Some Advice for reading poker faces

Posted under poker hands & poker strategy & texas hold em

poker
An important facet in poker tournaments is conning your opponents by making them think you actually have a good hand, when in all honesty it is possible your poker hand is horrible. This is referred to as “Poker face”, an unreadable expression for fooling your competitors into trusting in an idea that may not be true.

If you happen to have a good poker hand it is most likely going to affect your nerves, could possibly cause your hands to shake, and your heartbeat race. These are pretty obvious signs that your competitors may notice very fast, especially if you have been playing with them for some time. Be careful not to look at the pot if you hold some decent poker cards. This will show your poker buddies that you are, in your mind, adding up what you might win.

In the situation where you have a mediocre or dreadful hand, try not to avoid looking at your opponents, keep your eyes up, and try not to be uncertain about your bet. If you can convince yourself that your set of cards is equal, or superior than your competition; you will possibly convince them of this as well. Remember to make this seem as normal as possible. Your signals and motions may be saying one thing, while your words and the way you say them are making them believe something entirely different.

One more vital point of Texas Hold Em is to be attentive to your opponent’s “poker tells”. A “tell” is a habit or facial gesture that may tell you something about their poker hand. One vital rule to never forget is when your competition gives the appearance that he has a great Texas Hold Em hand; he, in all likelihood, is holding a weak hand. From a different angle, if he behaves in a way that seem like he has a poor poker hand, he very likely is holding a strong poker hand.

Even the pros get bluffed occasionally

Posted under Poker

According to the 2006 WSOP champ, Jamie Gold, he would be pleased to be remembered as the top bluffer in the poker world. But if his last Texas Holdem tournament is any sign, his wish may not come true ever.

The site is the 2007 Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic held at the Vegas Bellagio Hotel Casino in 2007. Featuring $50 - $100 blinds and a $15,000 buy-in, Darrell Dicken is just barely holding on. The seat 4 player has just raised his bet to $300, a minor increase with only one player calling his play. “I put him as being weak,” Jamie said, “I was thinking about raising, but instead I just called with a 10-3 of hearts to see what would happen.”

Jamie thought that Brad Booth would make a move, which he did. He re-raised to $1600 from the big blind. Gold was thinking that Booth had a good hand, but he was in an excellent position to make a move considering the quantity of dead money in the pot. Dicken ended up folding, and the unknown in Seat 4 called Booth’s raise.

Now there was over $4000 in the pot, so Jamie wagered another $4000. His thought was, only if someone else had aces or kings there would be no possibility they would make that call. Jamie’s plan was to make a sizeable move on the flop, as long as no ace was dealt. The second part of his strategy was to get Booth to fold, which he did. Booth folded with pocket queens.

Out of the flop there was an ace of ace-6-5, two clubs. The player in seat 4 checked and Jamie bet $2000. Jamie’s primary thought was to make him think that he had clubs. Seat 4 threw out a $10,000 chip, but didn’t say anything thus changing his raise into a call. Jamie’s thought was that seat 4 most likely had an ace, but you have to defend it in case he hits his set on the next card.

A 2 of hearts appeared on the turn, and Jamie decided to fold to what he was thinking was a top pair kicker. Seat 4 displayed a king-jack off suit. Seat 4 overpowered Gold by bluffing with a better hand, he forced a magnificent poker play and kept the bluff going straight to the end.

The well-known Venetian Hotel, is now banking on this new found popularity with its new audience-participation show called “The Real Deal!” in its showroom located in the Venetian Resort Hotel and Casino, starting in October.

The new game show will mix comedy and game show elements to entertain its live audience. The audience will also be able to join in the great game of Texas Holdem’ alongside the top poker players. The show has many prizes for the audience including a chance to win 1$ million.

In “The Real Deal!” the audience members will play with players like Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth and Daniel Negreanu. Around 10 professional players have already signed up for the poker game show. The audience will be able to play along with the 90 minute game thanks to handheld, wireless, touch screen devices located on each seat.

“People who take a trip to Las Vegas casinos want to play poker games,” Negreanu says, “but obviously they can’t play in a top poker tournament with the people like Doyle or Phil Hellmuth. But, in this show, they actually can.” At the start of the show, six audience members will be chosen to sit at the poker table on stage with two pros. Each audience member is then involved in the action by being dealt a unique poker hand on their devices. Everyone in the showroom is then involved in the action with big-screen monitors located on stage.

Creators of the show say that you don’t have to be a pro poker player to participate in the poker tv show. There are other ways to boost your point total, that doesn’t involve playing poker necessarily. Betting on the suit of the next poker card or trying to guess which state a particular audience member is from, are just some of the ways to come out a winner in this game.

The show’s creators are also placing bets on the personalities of the professional poker stars to have great moments. Poker players like Scotty Nguyen, the flamboyant five-time World Series of Poker winner, definitely knows about entertaining the crowd and will provide some great entertainment in this TV poker game show .

Celebrities Want To Legalize Online Poker

Posted under Poker

Shortly after the beginning of last week’s charity poker game to aid the Paralyzed Veterans of America, Ben Affleck goes all-in with a flop of Ace-Nine-King and two diamonds. He winces when two of his challengers call the bet. He yells “Re-buy”, but the turn is a seven of hearts. Affleck is disappointed when a jack of diamonds is dealt on the river. He took the hand seriously even though there was no real cash at stake. This is just the kind of thing that Affleck and several other poker enthusiasts are pushing for.

Over $100,000 was raised for the paralyzed victims, but this was not the only function of the celebrity poker event held in Coors Field. Members of the Poker Players Alliance are working very hard to legalize online poker in the United States. As part of their agenda, they are pushing to repeal the 2006 legislation Congress passed which forbids U.S. Banks and credit card companies from processing transactions related to online gaming websites.

John Pappas, executive director of the Poker Players Alliance, is optimistic about the direction that the new congress will lead this decision. Pappas says that the alliance is pushing for a licensed industry, just for internet poker, and not for all internet gambling. Pappas is interested in having a safe, regulated industry that all Americans can enjoy. The group is fighting for the rights of people and the privacy they deserve in their own home.

“There are misconceptions about poker and about online poker,” poker pro Andy Bloch said in between hands during the charity poker game. “Some people think that online gambling is gambling like a slot machine, and it’s not.”

The new era of poker

Posted under Poker

Can you envision walking into a popular Vegas casino hotel and seeing no poker dealers, chips, or poker cards? Well if this seems not easy to believe, you may be in for a big shock. The Sin City based casino hotel Excalibur is now testing with this new ground-breaking idea of automating everything from the dealers, to the actual poker tables. Officials from the casino hotel are going to equip the areas with 12 digital machines for a six-month trial period.
The North-Carolina based industry PokerTek is in charge of the electronic machines, which are revolutionizing the way poker will be played in Vegas. The enterprise already has 230 computers around the world, with the largest located in Casino du Montreal (a total of 25 computers were installed in this Canadian hotel).
So what are the downsides of this change? For starters, about 40 Excalibur poker dealers will be searching for new jobs. Some of these dealers have been functioning at the casino since its opening in 1990. Todd DeRemer, Excalibur’s Vice President of Casino Operations, says that the poker dealers will be offered other dealer careers in the same hotel.
According to DeRemer, the alteration is being made to give rookie poker enthusiasts a chance to play this popular game without feeling intimidated. He had already played these new machines before deciding upon the renovation. “It’s not overwhelming”, he says, “We think that area will bring back the gamblers”.
The superior machines will allow the gamblers to play Texas hold’em, seven card stud and Omaha. 40-inch flat screen tv’s, which are located in the hub of the table, will illustrate each table’s community cards, poker player’s stakes and the pot.
